Creating
Ozm Nazi
Ozm is a character I created for
Dungeons and Dragons. Originally, I had planned on creating a
grey elf character but, later, I decided to make him a Drow to
make his character more interesting.
Ozm is named after German physician
George Simon Ohm which also happens to be the symbol for
electrical resistance. Jules is also named after a unit of
measure.
His personality is mostly based on
aspects of myself along with my beliefs of how a typical male
Drow would act. Any resemblance between Ozm and Dilandau (from
Escaflowne) are strictly coincidental.
Ozm became a Nazi when I was designing
his outfit; I will explain. I searched the Internet for pictures
of Drows to get costume ideas but, the results were
disappointing; nearly all the pictures were of that female Drows
in revealing clothing or Drizzt Do’urden (from Forgotten Realms)
without a shirt on. Neither was suitable for Ozm’s outfit. All
other pictures varied too much in style, so it wasn’t very
helpful.
I decided to design his outfit based
on what little I knew about Drows at the time (pretty much the
info in the D&D Monster Manual). I considered their appearance;
white hair, red eyes, and black skin. I assumed that the black
skin was not referring to Negro brown skin based on the official
pictures portraying Drows with grey skin. Grey skin would be
closer to white. Then, coloured skin, combined with the white
hair and red eyes gave me the image of an albino, though my good
friend, Randy, stated that Drow eyes are entirely red. I found
this to be true when re-examining the official pictures. I
discarded this fact because it made Ozm’s eyes too inexpressive.
Back to the point, the closest human racial traits to that of
Drows would be those of albinos. Regretfully, there is no
society of albinos so, I reconsidered. Red eyes are closest to
pink eyes (no pigment) which are close to blue eyes (low
pigment) and white hair (no pigment) is close to blonde hair
(low pigment – I learned this in high school biology). This made
me think of Hitler’s pure race, Arians. This led me to believe
that a Nazi inspired uniform would be ideal for several reasons:
·
I wouldn’t have to modify the
uniform too much because Ozm is a wizard and doesn’t wear
armour.
·
Nazis are evil – so are Drows
·
Nazis are racist – so are Drows
·
Nazis blame the world’s
problems on other people – so do Drows
·
Nazis oppress weaker people –
so do Drows
·
Nazis killed millions of
innocent people – I’m sure Drows would too
Of course, this doesn’t work so well with a lot of the details
of the Drow culture. I know this but don’t feel like explaining
this any further.
This concludes the process I went
through to create Ozm. |
